Got my IB15's installed. Mini Review w/pics.

Postby bikinpunk » Thu Mar 12, 2009 11:58 am

Alright, guys. I’ve posted this on DIYma but wanted to post here, too. After quite a wait, I finally got my subs in a couple days ago. I was hoping they’d really be worth the wait. I already had my wall ready for them.

My system is this:

First impression out of the box:

they look pretty. and they're very light! Saved me about 24lbs on subs alone over my old IDmax12’s.

Subs installed. need to break them in before I start giving opinions.

Subs are now playing and OMFG! They’re crossed at about 70hz right now with a 12db slope. Typically I cross subs at 50hz with a steep slope. If the basket had been in the trunk they would have had a pretty high Q on them, so I flipped them (also to keep a stealth look). Doing this, I’m guessing the Q is around .5-.6. I’ll have to measure my cabin space later when I get the time.

The clarity and precision is friggin’ awesome. Out the gate, with no EQ I can already tell a huge difference over the IDmax’s. Where the max’s were a bit bloated in the 50hz region these don’t seem to have ANY trace of that.

I’ll do a full up review on them in a few days after I’ve had time to really test them. But, OMFG!

Oh, and always make sure you color code/mark your + & - wires correctly, otherwise you can wire things out of phase. That can cause you to think that brand new subs suck and you’ll have to gut your car to re-do the install. It happened to someone I know. ;)

Not sure on the power they’re receiving, really. I put the gain up a decent bit on the amp and then backed it down via the Audison interface. I did that just to have that extra headroom. I’ll throw a DMM on it later and try to give you an idea of power @ 0dB/50hz.

I just can’t get over how well they seem to blend over the IDmax’s. I mean, for 15’s you’d think you’d have to do some taming, but they’re nowhere near as ‘obtrusive’ as the IDmax’s were at least in regards to the 50hz region. And they still pound. What’s even better is that I haven’t heard any rattles in the bit of listening I’ve done. I put in a rap tune on the way back to work and rocked out to it. Sounded just fine. I then put in “Viva la Vida” and it blended very well. I need to work on t/a or phase to get midbass/subass aligned, but off the bat things sound VERY nice.

Well worth the $230 shipped. ;)

I’ll post more once I’ve gotten to listen subjectively.

Thanks, John, for making such an AWESOME woofer and such an excellent price.

:D

Thanks for the post Erin. Glad you are happy with them. Things wouldn't normally take this long but it has been difficult juggling the low supply of frames we have, training employees, and setting up new equipment all at the same time.

I understand, John.

FWIW to anyone else who might see this and wonder how much power you’d need for these subs…

alright fellas...

using a 0db test tone, on a 2ohm load I get ~17 volts.
So, (17^2)/2 = ~140w

so, 140w/2 = 70w..

these suckers are KILLING it on only 70w ... and that's based off a 0db test tone. how much of that 70w do you think these guys actually see?
